Whether you’re just starting out, beginning a new campaign, or just wish to breathe some new life into your small business, there are some easy, ‘right-now’ steps you can take to push your business to the next level.
6. Be Willing to be Excellent
Imagine yourself starting a new project, something totally unfamiliar to you; be it anything from flying a plane to planting out a vegetable batch, it doesn’t matter. Would you feel comfortable beginning without getting some ‘know-how’ from somewhere? Probably not; even when it’s not life endangering you will likely need to know when to do what, where and how.
Have you ever trained heavily for an event, or just to get yourself into really good shape? Having done such a great job attaining a wonderful level of excellence, at what level do you think you would be if you then left it for a year, or even six months? Admittedly, you wouldn’t actually need to start over again from scratch, but it certainly would feel like it.
One of the keys to succeeding in your home business is the willingness to learn… continuously. You will need to accept: not only do you not know everything there is to know about running a business, but you probably never will. This is just the way it is, and it’s not just you, it’s the same for everyone else as well. Your job is to mitigate the situation as much as possible. Start learning, keep learning, and never stop.
If fast-food chains can accept the need for a six-month probationary/training period, shouldn’t you be willing to invest as much in your own home-based business? We’re talking about a learn while you earn scenario, train while you’re working – proven to be one of the most effective training methods going. The fact that restaurant chains confidently leave nineteen-year-olds in charge of million pound operations, based on the strength of their training programmes, is surely an indication of how effective implementing such a programme would be for ourselves.
The number of people starting a business without any practical experience, OR THE WILLINGNESS TO ATTAIN ANY, is staggering. I’m not suggesting we all need Ph.Ds, far from it, but we must ensure we take what training is available and continuously seek out more. Luckily, many home-based opportunities provide some level of training, but even when it’s not openly offered, it will still be available somewhere, somehow. Be it by course, book, audio or webinar, it doesn’t matter. Find it… grow… excel… be excellent!
